Nursery Maintenance

Land-based and in-water nursery structures and substrates that hold the growing corals must be cleaned regularly to avoid overgrowth of algae, sponges, tunicates, barnacles, and other organisms. Sick corals in our in-water nurseries are removed to prevent the spread of diseases. Sick corals in our land-based facilities are placed into designated quarantined tables to be treated and monitored before they are re-integrated into our healthy coral tables. While this work isn’t difficult, it does require a lot of people power to keep up with our expanding nurseries. Nursery maintenance is a major component of our interns’ responsibilities and is also a great opportunity to involve citizen scientists to help keep the corals healthy.
